Last year was without the doubt the most successful and also most challenging year yet. A massive swell in new clients took a comfortable, long standing 2 - 3 week wait time and extended it to an unsustainable 3 month wait. While this sort of success was personally validating for the practice I have set up here in Australia, it also brought about a lot of challenges. What would happen if I was sick and needed to miss a day?!
The most notable challenge was the constant stream of emails from frustrated clients who couldn't get a booking, requesting to be squeezed in. Others thought the booking system was 'broken' due to an apparent lack of availability. Too, the number of clients simply not turning up for their bookings became a major issue. As the nature of my practice continued to evolve into more of a multi-level support practice than simply 'hairdressing', the 75 minute booking sessions were also often running over time and thus keeping other clients waiting was concerning.
Overall this created an environment which at times felt more like ineffective crowd-control at Boxing Day sales than one which allowed for a healthy relationship to the very work I enjoy. This manifested in reactionary stances (4 month minimum return intervals) which were an unnecessary overcompensation on my part and entirely due to stress at the time. Most clients were already spacing their bookings perfectly fine on their own! That 'policy' has since been removed from the website. Lessons learned hey?
Well, a little over 8 weeks into the new term and it seems as though the primary changes made to my practice (see below) have had the desired effect they were meant to. Currently we are back at a much more comfortable and sustainable 2 - 3 week wait time. Hopefully everyone can now get in when they need without having to plan months ahead, and with any luck we can keep things like this for the foreseeable future. As a footnote (and hopefully I'm not jinxing things) since the deposit requirement came into effect, every single client has turned up for their booking. Yay!
